History of Seattle Open Door Church

Seattle Open Door Church started as Bible Baptist Church on August 4, 1949. It originally met at the Burien Field House. Alvin Miller was the first permanent pastor.
The current property at 625 S.W. 149th St. was obtained in 1952. The church building was completed in 1955.
In 1957 the church joined the fellowship of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches and the Northwest Regular Baptist Fellowship (which is now Baptist Northwest Network).

In 2008 Bible Baptist Church changed its name to Seattle Open Door Church to be more inclusive in name and more importantly to be more inclusive in reaching out to the community. Individuals do not need to consider themselves as Baptists to attend Seattle Open Door Church. We welcome all Christians and all spiritual seekers regardless of denominational background or spiritual condition. The Gospel is available to everyone.

Since 2008 Seattle Open Door Church has become a multi-ethnic, cross-cultural church. We have individualized church services in a variety of languages: English, Korean, Samoan, and what we call "Recovery" (Community of Hope is a church service specifically for those struggling or overcoming addictions).

Because of all the various people groups represented in our church you will find we are a church that truly has it's doors open to anyone and everyone. We have individuals who come from a variety of denominations (Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, etc.).
Come just as you are, no 'masks' required.

What We Believe

1. Revelation, Scripture, and Authority
We believe God is revealed in creation, in the Bible, and in Jesus Christ. The Bible, all sixty-six Old and New Testament books, are divinely authoritative in all they affirm. We believe that the Holy Spirit dynamically superintended the verbal expressions of the human authors of the Bible so that the very thoughts God intended were accurately recorded in the Bible. We believe the Bible is inerrant as to fact and infallibly trustworthy as to truth. Our present Bible continues to bear the final authoritative instruction of God for the church and the world.

2. The Divine Trinity
We believe in God, the one triune, infinite, personal spirit who created and governs all things and who is the sole object of our worship. This one God has always existed in eternal relationship as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each identical in nature, equal in power and glory, and having precisely the same divine attributes.

3. God the Father
We believe that God the Father is the holy and loving Creator of all things. Unlimited in time, space, knowledge, and power, the Father has planned all that comes to pass.

4. God the Son
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. He became man, without ceasing to be God, and was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order to redeem sinful humanity. He satisfied God's holy and just demands by dying as our substitute on the cross. He assured our redemption by His resurrection from the dead. We believe Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and is exalted at the right hand of the Father.

5. God the Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the transforming agent who effectively imparts Christ's new life to all who believe. He baptizes them into the body of Christ, dwells within all believers, seals them for the day of redemption, and empowers them in holiness and love to serve God and His church.

6. The Creation and Fall of Humanity
We believe that all human beings are created in the image of God. Through Adam's disobedience, we by nature became alienated from God, acquired a destructive disposition to sin, and came under the judicial sentence of death.

7. Salvation
We believe that salvation is the gift of God offered to all humanity by grace and received through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

8. The Church
We believe the Church, having begun at Pentecost, is the body of Christ and the temple of the Holy Spirit, a spiritual community of all believers.

9. Human Destiny
We believe in the physical resurrection of the believers and the unbelievers: the believers to eternal fellowship with God (Heaven), the unbelievers to eternal punishment (Hell). We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ will return, and a glorious new heaven and earth where redeemed humanity will dwell forever with God.

English Congregation
In regards to our English congregation our worship style is contemporary with a few hymns at times. Our church service is from 11:00am-12:30pm. Our Senior Pastor, Richard D. Dover, is a dynamic preacher and teacher. He has been involved in ministry in a variety of capacities (Youth Pastor, Jail/Prison Ministry, Street/Evangelism Ministry, Outreach Pastor, Community Development Pastor) since 1980. Pastor Richard is also the Executive Director of Fairhaven House (a faith-based clean & sober housing program) and the Television Host of There is Hope TV. Pastor Rich has a burden for souls that drives all that he does. He also has a passion to see individuals walk in the gifts and callings of God.

Pastor Rich's wife Carmi has also been very involved in ministry. She has lead several small groups over the years, been on several short-term mission trips, managed a woman's clean and sober house, and is a prayer warrior.

SODC Vision

SODC Mission
We exist to reach out to the disillusioned, disenchanted, disconnected, disenfranchised and spiritual seekers by introducing them to the accepting and loving Jesus Christ. It is our goal to get them connected within a loving body of Christ followers, helping them grow in Christ through discipleship, and sending them out to reach those that don't know Christ, who are backslidden, or maybe hopeless.
Win-Connect-Disciple-Send

How We Accomplish Our Vision and Mission
We believe as we love God He will lead us to those who need the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Out of our love for these individuals we will connect with them to show them the love of God and then lead them to a saving relatonship with Christ. We will then help them to become strong followers of Christ through discipleship so they can not only be justified through Christ but so they can walk in holiness (sanctification). We will in the process equip them and send them out to win others to Christ.

Win people to Christ
We are committed to reaching out to all people, just as they are, without regard to race, gender, age, lifestyle, past sin, or whatever. The Gospel is for ALL.

We are committed to receiving direction from the Holy Spirit that enables creativity and innovation in the midst of this fast changing society, so we can effectively reach as many as possible with the Gospel. However, we will never water down or lessen the Gospel message.

Connect
We are committed to know each other in a more personal manner so that we are more effective at ministering to each other.

We are committed to small group ministry because it is where most individuals will be able to connect with each other and learn how to apply what is taught in the pulpit.

We are committed to reliance on prayer for direction, conception, planning, and execution of the ministries and activities of this church. We desire to be known as a church of prayer. Prayer is a great way to connect with others.

Disciple-Train
We are committed to equipping Christians through Biblical preaching and teaching.

We are committed to helping people discover their spiritual gifts so they might be used in building up and growing the Body of Christ, the Church.

We are committed to maintaining a high standard of excellence in all ministries. This will be achieved when every person is exercising his or her God-given spiritual gifts to the best of his or her ability.

Send Out
We are committed to missions and will faithfully give to missions a minimum of 10% of all tithes and offerings.

We are committed to reach out into our community whenever possible to bring awareness of the Gospel to our local community.

Join our team at SODC

In order to accomplish the above we need sold out, committed Christians, to join with us to accomplish our vision and mission. Individuals who love Christ with all their heart but for whatever reason they do not 'fit in' where they are currently attending church. Maybe they are not able to walk in their gifts and callings. Does that describe you?
