2014 Mission Trip
JTM Medical Mission Team (that partnered with us) is ministering at various times in Dulag. We worked with a church in Dulag.

Aid to Dulag, Leyte, Philippines is a missions project of Seattle Open Door Church for the people of Dulag who are survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. Our goal was to provide on an ongoing basis food, clothing, and medical supplies. This project was started by Pastor Richard & Carmi Dover based upon a personal situation.

Before the Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines Pastor Richard & Carmi were going to go on a two-week vacation to the Philippines in late January. Carmi's family lives in the Manila area and Dulag (her home town). It was to be a time of fun, exploration, break from ministry duties, and for Richard to meet Carmi's family for the first time.

However, with the horrific damage caused by the typhoon, specifically in Leyte, there is no way they can ignore the devastation of the area. So Pastor Richard and Carmi decided to use their time in the Philippines as a time to provide aid (food, clothing, supplies etc.) to the people of Dulag and the surrounding area along with a personal vacation time.

There were tremendous needs. Many of the residents of Dulag have lost their homes, vehicles, personal possessions.

Why Support the Aid for Dulag Cause?
Some may wonder why there is a need for our small relief effort when there are many large organizations providing relief. Here are some reasons:

  • The very large organizations are going to mainly focus on the areas with the most deaths and destruction-thankfully Dulag did not have any deaths that we have heard of.

  • The large organizations are going to mainly focus on the highly populated regions-Dulag is no comparison to Tablocan City.

  • The large organizations have the people come to them-it is our goal to reach out to the people in outlying areas of Dulag-go to the people, not just have the people come to us.

  • The large organizations are not able to minister in a one-on-one basis. Our goal is to not only provide resources but to pray with and encourage the people-to give hope.

  • The large organizations have a high overhead to cover wages, infrastructure, etc-we have very little overhead thus can make resources go further.

  • The large organizations are in great positions to help out immediately after disaster but the need continues much longer after the disaster has occurred. It is our desire to establish key relationships so we can provide ongoing help.

The Future

It is our goal to continue minsitering to the people in Dulag, Before the typhoon they had poor conditions and even with all the help after the typhoon they will be living in very poor conditions.

Map of Nepal

Aid to Nepal is a project of Seattle Open Door Church for the people of India who are survivors of the 2015 Himalyan Earthquake. Our goal is to raise funds for BNCA (Bhutanese-Nepalese Churches of America) which will distrubute supplies and funds to local pastors in Nepal. The local pastors in Nepal will lead out in aid relief in some of the remotest areas of Nepal.

The reason we are collecting funds for BNCA is based upon the recommendation of Pastor Roshan of Love and Grace Evangelical Church. Love and Grace Evangelical Church is a Bhutanese-Nepalese church that meets at SODC. Pastor Roshan stated that all the Nepalese churches in Washington have decided to send all donations to BNCA so that there would be one main organization receiving donations. It makes sense to SODC as a church to follow the guidance of our Nepalese brothers and sisters since almost all of them are refugees from Nepal, and have the best understanding of the situation. (Sadly many have lost relatives to the earthquake.)

View this Presentation of the story of just one of many villages that were devastated by the earthquake.

Why Support the Aid for Nepal Cause?
Some may wonder why there is a need for this relief effort when there are many large organizations providing relief. Here are some reasons:

  • The very large organizations are going to mainly focus on the areas with the most deaths and devastation in the larger cities.

  • The large organizations overall have the people come to them-wheras local pastors can go where the relief is most needed.

  • The large organizations are not able to minister in a one-on-one basis. Local Nepal pastors are the best resource to minister to the local community.

  • The large organizations have a high overhead to cover wages, infrastructure, etc-BNCA and the local Nepal pastors have minimal overhead.

  • The large organizations are in great positions to help out immediately after disaster but the need continues much longer after the disaster has occurred. BNCA and local pasors will be able to continue with ongoing aid.

the genesis project

The Genesis Project

According to many statistics Seattle is #3 in sex trafficking in America, and #1 in minor sex trafficking in America. These are very saddening statistics especially since much of the sex trafficking occurs just a few miles from our church is located.

Seattle Open Door Church is a small church and we are not able to accomplish much to help those caught up in sex trafficking. BUT, Senior Pastor Richard Dover is convinced that we was a church must do something. What we can do is partner with organizations that are helping to rescue those that want out of commercial sexual exploitation. The Genesis Project is one of those organizations. The Genesis Project provides a drop-in center as a safe-haven for women and girls who have been involved in commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking. They provide a variety of services such as food, clothing, laundry, showers, emergency shelter, case management, legal support, Job & Life Skill Classes, Licensed Mental Health Counseling, and much more.

Pastor Rich as the founder and radio host for There is Hope Radio has promoted The Genesis Project to the lisenting audience including interviews with some of the staff. As a church SODC makes monthly donations to help support The Genesis Project.

The Genesis Project Freedom Walk

Freedom Walk 5K

Freedom Walk 5K is an event that The Genesis Project puts on annually to raise funds and awareness about the issue of sex trafficking in the greater Puget Sound area. Though many are aware of the issue of human trafficking internationally, The Genesis Project strives to bring hope and awareness to the fact that human trafficking exists right here in the Puget Sound area. The sole purpose of the Freedom Walk is to do just that, bring awareness to the issue, raise funds to rescue, and bring full restoration to as many young girls and women who have fallen victim to sex trafficking as possible.

During the 5K Walk participants will walk the same streets in SeaTac, WA as many prostituted women walk everyday. As you take the Journey in Her Shoes, you will hear stories of horror, but more importantly stories of hope and victory.
